Love Story #1

Angel of Love

By Lisa Venable

One cool spring evening in Minneapolis, I was walking uptown with a friend and passed some homeless people. One man in particular appeared rather destitute and was holding a sign that read, "Anything will help." Now, my first inclination was to stop right then and there and give him hope. But, the fear voice in my head whispered, "they might be faking it just like those guys waiting at the end of every highway exit ramp." So, I walked by but my heart kept jumping up and down inside.

My friend turned to me and said, "you need to go back, don't you?" and I nodded, pulled a twenty-dollar bill from my purse and proceeded back down the street. Before I could reach the man my money was intended for, I saw an older woman sitting on a bench rocking back and forth. She had no sign, few teeth and needed a good bath. She did not seem to be asking for anything.

I stopped and knelt down beside her. She smelled pretty bad but I didn't care, she needed love. I put the money in her hands and said, "Do you need this?" She nodded and whispered a soft thank you. "It's hard for you, isn't it," I asked, simply trying to validate her likely feelings. She nodded again without words.

Then, I noticed she was wearing hand-made mittens that were red with giant white hearts on them. I smiled wide, took her hands in mine and put my head against hers. "I had those same mittens when I was a girl," I told the woman. "I thought they were one of a kind!" The old woman just smiled. Maybe my heart mittens had come full circle and drew me to show loving kindness in this moment in time. I felt so blessed as I continued to hold this woman for several more minutes. The depths of compassion I felt that night is beyond words.

When I left, I said to my friend, "do you think she was an angel for me?" We both grinned and I knew in that moment that the whole scenario was the essence of the "Love Campaign" I had been envisioning.
